What do Board Members Do?

Being part of the ALMA board is a great way for you to shape your industry association and give back a little to the industry. The role of the board is to steer the organization on a strategic and planning level, and to direct the executive director on a tactical level. The board meets in person twice a year, once the day before the Winter Symposium, and again some time in the Spring (usually March). Board members are also often asked for input on ALMA initiatives via email and the forums, and many participate on other committees, for example Symposium planning, communications and intellectual property.

What makes a good board member?

Primarily enthusiasm, but a knowledge of some aspect of the industry, and a little time also helps! The time commitment is not huge – aside from the two meetings it is anything from a few minutes some months to half an hour or so some weeks. Much board input is taken via email or the forums, so the exact time where input is required is somewhat flexible. Please speak to any of the existing board members to learn more.

What’s in it for me?

Well, that depends on you! It is a great way to give back to the loudspeaker industry – by driving the organization forward you are ensuring that it is there to support future generations of loudspeaker designers. If you are a manager, by participating in the board you have an opportunity to shape the organization in a direction that will benefit your company’s young engineers, therefore an organization that fulfils the needs of your company. And finally, it is a great opportunity to raise your own profile within the industry, especially for those working for smaller or less well known companies.
