Show Updates, Test & Measurement and More September 2007

Greetings!

Its been a little crazy around here with all the preparations for the China and Winter Symposia! In this issue we have updates about our upcoming China and Winter Symposia, news from the world of audio Test & Measurement, information about ALMA board nominations and more. We have so much to tell you about in this newsletter that we don't have space for our regular 'Ask Andy' and member news features. They will return in December!

Remember, this newsletter is interactive - you can click on the blue links in this email to get more information from the ALMA web site!

The next event in the ALMA calendar is the China Symposium. With the same title as the 2008 Las Vegas event, this symposium will focus more on the requirements of offshore manufacturing industries with training classes including 'How to Pass Vendor Qualification Audits' and 'Basic End of Line Measurements' as well as Loudspeaker Design and engineering. Thirteen exhibitors have already signed up: Audiomatica, Cyberbond, Guangzhou Wenbo Exhibition Company, Henkel, K&K International, Klippel, Listen, Loudsoft, Phase Design, Redrock Acoustics, Sea Galleon, Tonwel and VoiceCoil. The full schedule has just been announced. Keynote presentations will be given by Mr. Jingyuan Ju of GGEC, Patrick Turnmire of Redrock Acoustics and Earl Geddes of Audio Intelligence. Watch out for regular updates with our China Symposium bulletin, and in the meantime visit our website for more information.

Winter Symposium Update

ALMA Winter Symposium

Preparations are in full swing for the ALMA Winter Symposium, our main event of the year. In the last newsletter we announced that exhibitor booking was open. We are pleased to announce that we already have ten exhibitors signed up - Loudsoft, Listen, Inc., Dr. Kurt Muller GmbH, KSC Industries, Phase Design, Klippel GmbH, STEP Technologies, VoiceCoil, Gras, and Ferrotec. If you have not signed up yet, don't miss out on this opportunity to promote your products at the industry's premier networking event - fill out a booth application form to secure a spot. Out symposium schedule is taking shape with two training classes - Electroacoustic measurements by Christopher Struck, and Peter Larsen's extremely popular 'Basics of Loudspeaker Design' course. There is one other training program to be announced shortly. We have also decided on subjects for our round table and panel discussions, and lined up four technical papers on new and exciting topics in loudspeaker design and analysis. More will be announced in our series of Winter Symposium news bulletins, and you can always find out the latest from our web site.

Technical Note - Measurement of Voice Coil TemperatureFerrotec Note

Ferrotec has released a technical note on a new procedure that it has developed to measure the voice coil temperature of a loudspeaker as a function of input electrical power or as a function of time at constant power. This application note describes the basic theory behind the measurements and provides the design of a simple electrical circuit useful for obtaining the voice coil temperature data in real time.

Test & Measurement Special

I have received updates from many in the loudspeaker test and measurement business for this special feature - click on the 'more' links to read the full press release from each ALMA member:

Tonwel compliance testing systemTonwel Audio Company (China) has recently released a software-driven compliance testing machine which can perform a complete test to the ALMA test method TM-438 - Test Method for Measurement of the Stiffness of Loudspeaker Driver Suspension. More.

Listen, Inc. has recently released SoundMapTM, a time-frequency analysis program which has applications in the impulse response measurement of loudspeakers and analysis of loose particle and rub & buzz defects. More.

Loudsoft offers the FINELab™ QC Production Test System was developed by Peter Larsen, because he was not satisfied with the measuring system he had been using for many years. It is simple and reliable and has been designed to cover his daily working needs and nothing more. It shows both the frequency response and the impedance of the tested speaker at the same time and enables the tested speaker to be compared with a reference curve. More.

Audiomatica presents the brand new CLIO 8.0 software, a professional suite to execute electrical and acoustical measurements under Windows. CLIO 8.0 is one of the first commercial packages exploiting Wavelet Analysis for loudspeakers characterization. More.

Klippel Vibrometer PictureKlippel GmbH has launched a Scanning Vibrometer (SCN) which performs non-contact measurement of the mechanical vibration and the geometry data of cones, diaphragms, panels and enclosures. It measures mechanical vibration of the transducer, visualizes the vibration behavior, shows contribution to sound pressure output, predicts directivity pattern, separates radial and circular modes, analyzes actively radiating cone regions and detects loudspeaker defects. More.

AES New York

AES LogoMany of you will be preparing to visit the AES show in New York next week. The ALMA office has received updates from several ALMA members who will be exhibiting and presenting papers, so do stop by and see them. Wolfgang Klippel will be presenting an exhibitor seminar "Vibration and radiation of loudspeaker cones" and demonstrating new features of the Klippel QC System and the final software of 3D Scanning Vibrometer system at booth # 458. Listen will be celebrating the launch of SoundMap, its new Time-Frequency Analysis software by giving away free T-shirts to all who stop by the booth (#646) to see the product. In addition, new features from SoundCheck 8 will be demonstrated. A paper on "Evaluation of Time-Frequency Analysis Methods and Their Practical Applications"  will be presented as part of the 'P7 - Signal Processing, Part 3' session on Saturday, October 6. Time-Frequency Analysis seems to be a popular subject this year - in the same paper session, Daniele Ponteggia of Audiomatica is presenting a paper on "Time-Frequency Characterization of Loudspeaker Responses Using Wavelet Analysis". Audiomatica will be showing new hardware and software solutions for the CLIO system at booth #1037 and will demonstrate the new CLIO 8 software in action with the brand new hardware CLIO Firewire and CLIO PCI/USB. The company is also presenting an exhibitor seminar "CLIO 8 System Overview and Applications".
