  • Greetings!

In this short update we introduce our Winter Symposium training class "Fact or Fiction", presented by Dr. Lidia Lee. We also offer you a sneak preview of some of our exhibitors, and remind you about our members dinner and hotel reservations. Please forward this update to your friends and colleagues!

    Training Class: Fact Or Fiction

Facts versus opinions can often be the determining factor in critical decisions in the design process. The difference between the two is if a claim is supported by a scientific process or research.
In this session we will discuss potential errors in decisions that use opinions as fact. We will discuss evidence- based research methods and the various components and steps that are involved in experimental design, including ‘blind’ designs. We will also include steps involved in conducting an experimental study such as how to formulate a hypothesis, issues relating controlling variables, test validity and reliability, internal versus external validity and accuracy and basic statistical techniques and analyses.
A solid understanding of the foundation of how a research task should be conducted will allow you to critically analyze the information presented to you and how to determine its fact vs. opinion basis. Areas covered will include opinions versus facts, evidence and evidence based research, experimental design and data analysis.

Dr. Lidia Lee has over 15 years experience in psychoacoustics research, primarily focused on issues related to perception and sound quality of audio systems and speech recognition among individuals with hearing impairment. Dr. Lee’s research has been published in numerous peer reviewed journals and includes such topics as the perception of nonlinear distortion, the perception of group delay in audio systems and the quantification of sound quality issues in compression drivers. She has a doctorate in Audiology from Indiana University, an undergraduate degree with a focus in Experimental Psychology.

Listen, Inc. will be demonstrating the new version 7.0 of SoundCheckTM – the leading software based test system for R&D and production line testing of loudspeakers and other electroacoustic and audio electronic devices. This new version offers many additional and improved features including multichannel analysis, a new sequence wizard to simplify test set-up for first-time users, an improved loose particle algorithm, an improved multitone stimulus and new post-processing algorithms. The new FFT and inverse FFT algorithms allow you to easily post-process in either the time or the frequency domain, for example, when combining far- field and near-field measurements. This is particularly useful for examining the impulse response of a spliced loudspeaker measurement.

K & K International specializes in acoustic test systems designed for fast and efficient quality control of loudspeaker units, loudspeaker systems, headphones, handsets and microphones. The P630 Product and smaller systems as P730 and P830 together with a new pre amplifier will be demonstrated as well as new software versions. A wide range of parameters can be measured including frequency response, sensitivity, average, polarity, rub & buzz, THD, impedance, resonance and Q. The result can be returned as an "approved / rejected" result or full test results can be displayed. It can, at the same time, save all data for further statistical analysis in less than 1 second.

There is still time to sign up for a tabletop booth!

    Quality Food!

Our quality theme continues with our 'Members Only' dinner at Yolie's Brazilian Steakhouse. Yolie's will serve an endless supply of succulent Brazilian style meats at the table, together with all the traditional side dishes. And don't forget the legendary caipirinhas!
