Greetings!
January 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of the ALMA
Winter Symposium and it is only fitting that the
organization celebrates this milestone with its most
ambitious program to date. This year the
symposium topic is "Sound Quality in Loudspeaker Design
and Manufacturing" and the program grows to 3 days,
principally to expand our educational and training
offerings. The highlight of the educational track
will be Dr. Floyd Toole's full-day course on "The
Acoustics and Psychoacoustics of Loudspeakers and
Rooms". In addition to training, attendees
will be offered the usual variety of exhibits, technical
papers, panel discussions, tutorials and round table
sessions. These events will be discussed in
greater detail in future symposium
bulletins. I can still recall my first
winter symposium (1994). It was held in a small
ballroom at the Riviera Hotel and the program consisted
of a few technical papers, exhibits and a panel
discussion. Fast forward to the 2008 symposium and
it is gratifying to see how our event has grown and
matured over the years. The Winter
Symposium has become the "go to" event for our industry
and the response of attendees and exhibitors continues
to be overwhelmingly positive. As always, we
welcome back our repeat attendees but if you've never
attended an ALMA symposium, I invite you to join us and
see what you've been missing. Steve

Training Course -
Electroacoustic Measurement

Following on from the success of last year's
sell-out training course on Electroacoustic
Measurement, taught by Christopher Struck, we are
re-running the course in a full day format. The morning
will cover similar content to last year's half day
course - the fundamentals of electroacoustic
measurements, including principles of acoustics,
instrumentation, and data interpretation as well as
practical information on how to perform appropriate
loudspeaker tests. The afternoon will expand on the
knowledge gained in the morning session to cover
simulated free field measurements, distortion &
non-linearity and special topics including impedance and
small signal parameters, vibration measurement, polar
response, and time-frequency analysis Christopher
Struck is CEO of his own company, CJS Labs, and prior to
that held a variety of engineering and management
positions at companies including Brüel & Kjær, Dolby
Laboratories and Tymphany Corporation. More
